Yeah, yeah, I know. Declan should be talking up his books. Or discussing writing.
I don’t want to.
Yes. Fae’d to Black came out last month.
You want to buy my books? You know where to find them.
As I said before, since I have moved to Texas, I have picked up the local sport.
Not football.
I’ve already done this post once, but I have more… there’s always more.
No, I don’t want EVERY gun.
Yet.
After all, Hi-point exists.
I have mostly tripped over The Honest Outlaw on YouTube, and his reviews are solid. Every gun he has reviewed and that I can try in person, I have largely liked.
I’m also fond of Pew View, who makes almost every gun look awesome. Yes, he tried a Hi-Point once. Not even he could make that piece of garbage dance and sing.
Personally, I think the more I get into guns, the more of a snob I become. I’m still cheap at heart—Scottish, thank you, though my Jewish friends think my Yiddish is a little too good and look at me funny when they learn about how much I can torture a penny.
But, I have my standards.
I only buy handguns that will serve more than one function: defend my house, or carry concealed. I wear a lot of blazers, so concealed carry for me just means that I can wear it on my belt and carry it around all day. It’s less a matter of size and more a matter of weight.
Also, I MUST BE ABLE TO TEST FIRE IT. I will absolutely not purchase a gun I’ve never fired before.
And at this point, I must have decent sights on the gun. I can be optics ready, but the last time I tried putting a red dot on a gun, the LOCK-TITE SCREW POPPED OUT and disappeared on my first attempt.
CZ Scorpion
Last time, I dove into how I really like Czechnology (thank you for that coinage, comments section).
And I must admit, I really am fond of the look of the CZ Scorpion. I’ve handled it. I like the weight. I like the safety. I like the grip.
I even like the sights so much, I have gone out of my way to find those iron sights … and I can’t seem to find them, because they’re just “iron sights.” Argh.
Why am I not buying this?
I have two ranges near me.
As I live in Texas, “nearby” is relative. It usually just means “under an hour away.”
The first Range is Range USA … which is overpriced on a good day, but let’s not worry about that.
The other one is the Frisco Gun Club.
Neither one of these places have a CZ Scorpion for rent.
The Springfield Kuna? Range has it, no doubt about that. I wouldn’t touch a Springfield product if I can help it. But they have it. And why do their sights feel like they’re about to fall off….
Anyway.
But I’d need to play with the Scorpion before I do anything else with it. I’ve seen it in real life exactly once: a local gun show. And if you think those places have loopholes, you clearly have never been to one. The only loophole is called “the parking lot;” my wife once purchased a gun from a retired cop who had one gun too many and needed the cash more than the gun.
Again, anyway…
The point is, I’ve handled this gun, I like what little I’ve experienced of this gun … I’d just like more experience before I invested … an absurd amount of money into it.
(Okay, as guns go, it is not absurd. It’s just absurd for me.)
Grand Power Stribog
As noted above, I’ve experienced the Springfield Kuna. And I’ve dealt with a few other roller-delayed guns, including an HK SP5. I like them
But I will not give Springfield a dime if I can avoid it. Do you know what you call a gun company that supports anti-2A legislation? Not Getting My Money.
And I’ve heard nice things about this one.
Why not buy it?
Like the Scorpion, I can’t get my hands on one.
The Stribog is actually a little cheaper than the Scorpion—surprising, considering the system—but it also has less of a reputation. Hence the need to get my hands on one.
The Stribog also has integrated, flip-down / flip-up iron sights … though I’m told those are made of plastic, and the Kuna is made of metal? If it’s as flimsy or worse than the Kuna, that would be a definite negative.
PSA JAKL-9
Yes, we are on a bit of a pistol caliber carbine (PCC) kick here. I don’t see why. I mean, I already a nice, relatively cheap PCC that takes Glock mags. I can’t imagine why I’d need another one.
It could be that nine-mil is cheaper than .223.
And these take Scorpion magazines. Do you realize how much cheaper those are than some other magazines?
And I like Palmetto State Armory products.
Why not buy it?
Guess.
Go ahead, guess.
If you said “I can’t get my hands on it,” you’d be right.
And in this case … it doesn’t even come with the backup iron sights like the Stribog.
PSA AK-V
AK aesthetics, a nice, ALG trigger, takes CZ mags. The furniture could use some work…
Why Not Get it?
Almost I feel like this is just the PCC post, with an endless refrain of “I can’t sample one” in the “why not” section.
Not to mention … again, I have a damn PCC already.
Okay, I have a solution.
THIS is not a PCC
An AK in .223/.556 (PSA AK-101 AM?)
Finally. Not a PCC.
Why the interest? In a world where 7.62 and 5.45 (ie: the traditional AK calibers) are are in Russia … which is now under embargo for three years now … there is no reason to get a standard caliber AK.
After all, if 7.62 and 5.45 are more expensive than 223/556, what’s the point?
But there is something about the AK I like. The integrated sights being one of them. I prefer the side charging handle to the “ambidextrous” AR version. And the few AKs I’ve handled feel very sturdy.
Why not get it?
I don’t need it.
Seriously, no.
Right now, I have three AR lowers in the house (with accompanying uppers, obviously).
None of them are particularly expensive. I’m so cheap, I got LPVOs because I like them better than Eotech red dots (they’re more functional with some nice magnification capacity)—and all three of them TOTAL are still cheaper than one single Eotech.
Short version: in case of emergency or government incursion, I’m well covered. In fact, so is everyone is in my household. I don’t need another rifle.
And yes, for those of you keeping score at home, my little “wish list” here is around five thousands dollars, depending on if I get them used, or if I can get them wholesale, etc.
But yeah, these are more guns I’ll probably never buy, if only because I’m going to just keep going round and round in my head over whether or not the money is worth it, comparing it to others, etc.
Unless of course, you want to buy more books and keep me in ammo. If I get enough, maybe I can get another gun.
In Texas, shooting is a sport. Football is a religion.
My wish list is down to a good over-and-under, a 10mm carbine or SBR for the truck, and a small .380 with some sort of optical aid. Old age sucks.
Now my sword list is much longer...
