Different in many ways but somewhat similar in others -- have you read any of the books by Rolf Nelson? Some regular SF, a "coming of age" story vaguely like the one Heinlein wrote, and an unusual one about setting up a new order of monks (with rifles).

I'm probably a bit biased because I helped him with some bits, but I like his work. You might check out "Heretics of St. Possenti"
