Sigh. I've been trying to find a good fairytale retelling for years, and all of them fall into this description. Or worse, you can't tell that they're Christian at all. They're just the book equivalent of Christian radio: watered down pap with very little worldbuilding, character arcs, or even exposition. Now, a really good writer is Patrick Carr, who I believe is Catholic. His Darkwater trilogy was amazing. The characters literally debate theology while fighting assassins that can only be seen by children and other scary things.
Wow, such a great essay. I would include a couple others as Christian Fiction. But ya, John Ringo is probably the outlier. I loved Lawhead’s stuff. If you read the Bible, you can’t reconcile these milquetoast characters with actual saints.
You nailed it. 👏 we all hate preachy stuff. I think we need a new Category-Faith writing. Because its so easy to offend the pearl clutchers. This is probably why I like the moral quandries of "The Walking Dead", although I don't always prefer how they solve them-i get their solution. I'm now mentally going over my work. Did I make these errors? Good green jelly beans in a basket, I hope not. Eeek!
